Designated Scholarship Program

MTC SCHOLARSHIP FUND Over the years our chapter has supported the MOAA National Scholarship Program. We are presently collecting for our third scholarship. This program is directed toward military (Active or Retired) dependent students entering college and seeking their first Undergraduate Degree. Many of our members and board wanted to meet and get to know the scholarship recipients. The National program tries very hard to support local recipients, but in the past years our recipients’ universities are three to five hours away--limiting their availability to attend a meeting. This program consists of loans, grants, and scholarships. This past year the MTC MOAA Board investigated the possibility of giving local scholarships to provide scholarship support to a veteran of the U.S. Armed Services who was wounded during military action or who has suffered a permanent disability as a result of being wounded. Belmont University and David Lipscomb University have been very supportive in accepting military veterans. These universities have worked to decrease the cost of tuition for these veterans. Many times these universities get the costs down, but the veterans still may need $500 to $1500.00 additional funds for the year. These universities have developed a program that will provide these discretionary funds, and they will administer this program per our chapter’s guidelines. Our chapter has not filed for tax-exempt status under the IRS Code Section 501(c) 3 (EIN 54-1659039). The universities and MOAA National have this tax status. Therefore, you will receive confirmation of your contribution from one of the three organizations depending on the level of funds that we generate each year. If you have a preference on where your funds are allocated, please let us know and we will try to comply with your request; but please know that all funds raised from our scholarship solicitation will be used to fund one of these three programs based on the fund determination made by your elected Board of Directors.

MOAA National Scholarship Program
Applicants for all of The MOAA National Hosted programs must plan to attend an accredited college or university during the 2011-2012 school year as a full-time student. All loans, grants, and scholarships are designated for students seeking their first undergraduate degree. No loans, grants, or scholarships are applicable toward graduate study. There is one online application for all scholarships, grants, and interest-free loan programs.
Interest-free loans, MOAA's main program, are renewable annually for up to five years of full-time undergraduate study. Assistance is available only to students who have not yet earned an undergraduate degree. The interest-free loan and grant program provides $5,500 loans, which are renewable for up to five years of undergraduate study. Students selected as loan recipients and their their military parent must sign a promissory note before funds can be disbursed. Loans are disbursed in two increments: one-half by early August and one-half by mid-December. Eligibility Students (under age 24) who are children of former, active or retired officers or active or retired enlisted military personnel are eligible to apply. If such a child served in a Uniformed Service before completing college, however, his or her maximum age for eligibility will be increased by the number of years he or she so served, up to five years. Military academy cadets are not eligible for this program.
Selection Criteria Qualified students with a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale are selected on the basis of their scholastic ability, activities, and financial need.
The online application opens in November and must be completed and submitted no later than noon EST March 1st of the following year. Semifinalists are notified in March. Recipients are notified in May.
