Designated Scholarship Program

Scholar Update

Congratulations are in order for one of our designated scholars; Leigh Taylor Overby will graduate Samford University on May 26, 2010 with a BS in Nursing!

The Designated Scholarship Program of the Middle Tennessee Chapter of MOAA provides an interest-free loan of up to $5,500 per year and/or a grant of $500 per year for up to five (5) undergraduate years.

Who is eligible to apply?  One of the parents of the applicant must be on active duty, retired, a former commissioned or warrant officer or a member of the National Guard or Reserve.  Officers must be members of MOAA.  The applicant must have at least 3.0 on a 4.0 scale and be less than 24 years old.  The applicant must live or have a home of record in the Middle Grand Division of Tennessee or that portion of Kentucky containing a part of Ft. Campbell or the adjacent counties where Ft. Campbell families live.

How do you apply?  Applicants may apply on the internet starting November 1 until March 1 each year.  You apply for a regular scholarship on the National MOAA web page at: www.moaa.org/education .  After viewing the webpage then click on: "2007-2008 application".  After applying, the selection of the Middle Tennessee Chapter Designated Scholar is made by a committee at MOAA Headquarters in Washington, D.C.

The Middle Tennessee Chapter has sponsored the Chapter Designated Scholarship with a commitment to provide $25,000 over a five year period.

Our 2003 scholar was Beth MacIntire, whose father is an active duty Army surgeon.  She has now graduated and is pursuing a Masters Degree at Colorado State University.

Our 2004 scholar was Amanda Crabtree.  She was the beneficiary of our second chapter scholarship established last year by the Hedges family in honor of Colonel John Hedges, USAF, deceased and Mrs. Barbara Hedges (Former 1st Lt., USAF).

Our 2005 scholar was Leigh Overby, who
graduated in May 2007.  She is now a First Lieutenant (USAF).

Our 2006-2009 scholar is Robin Overby.  She is the beneficiary of our second chapter scholarship and is now attending the University of Tennessee in Knoxville.

Our 2007-2010 scholar is Mark Young.  He is the beneficiary of our first chapter scholarship and is now attending Auburn University and is enrolled in the Marine NROTC Program.

Both current scholarship recipients will receive a $5,000.00 interest-free loan and a $500.00 grant for each scholarship year.

  2009 Scholarship Solicitation Letter

                                                                                   3 February 2009

Dear Chapter Members,

Our 2009 Chapter Scholarship Drive is open!

If you respond with the level of generosity that has characterized our chapter in the past, 2009 will be another super year for our scholars.

  • Leigh Overby, our first graduate, has been promoted to First Lieutenant (USAF) and continues to serve as a Surgical Nurse at Keesler AFB.
  • Robin Overby (Leigh’s younger sister) maintains straight A’s at UT studying Broadcast Journalism.
  • Mark Young is majoring in Anthropology at Auburn University, and is looking forward to being commissioned in the Marine Corps.  He currently serves as the Cadet Platoon Sergeant for the Auburn NROTC Drill Team.

Given the above it is clear that our efforts and the MOAA program are having an impact; and that our scholars should be a source of pride for both their families and our Chapter.

Last year we asked for a contribution of $25.00 from each member.  Sixty five chapter members responded with a total contribution of $5900.00.

This year, we again ask for a contribution of $25.00 per member.  With these proceeds we will finish paying for the second scholarship and provide a down payment on a third.  You will recall that MOAA has offered to name and support a third scholar if the Chapter makes a down payment and accepts the obligation to raise the $25,000.00 over the next few years.  Three years ago the membership established a goal of creating and maintaining four scholarships; with your continuing support 2009 will mark the midpoint toward that goal.

Last year we lost Hap Macintire and Bob Jenkins; both of whom were strong proponents of our scholarship effort.  Fortunately Charles Stewart has volunteered to step forward to fill the gap on our Scholarship Committee.  Please send your check, made out to the MOAA Chapter Scholarship Program, to him in the enclosed envelope.  Your generosity is greatly appreciated!
